Every time the word law is
used in Romans it is nomos except:
Ro 2:12 I shall perish without
the law (460)
Ro 9:4 - Who
are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the
service of God, and the promises; (3548)
G3551 - íüìïò - nomos (nom'-os )
From a primary word íÝìù nemoô (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to animals); law
(through the idea of prescriptive usage), generally (regulation), specifically (of Moses [including the volume];
also of the Gospel), or figuratively (a principle):law.
G460 - Píüìùò - anomoôs
(an-om'-oce )
Adverb from G459; lawlessly, that is, (specifically) not amenable to (the Jewish) law:without
law.
G3548 - íïìïèåóßá
- nomothesia (nom-oth-es-ee'-ah )
From G3550; legislation (specifically the institution of the Mosaic code):giving of the
law.
1Timothy 1:8 the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully (RSV)
Romans 7:7 If it had not been for the law, I should not have known sin (RSV)
What is the purpose of the law?
James 1:23-25 - For if any be a hearer of the word,
and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth
his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty,
and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (A mirror to show us our sinful selves)
Romans 3:20 - Therefore by the deeds of the law there
shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
(Phillips) Indeed it is the straight-edge of the Law that shows us how crooked we are.
(NLT) For no one can ever be made right in Gods sight by doing what his law commands. For the more we know Gods law, the clearer it becomes that we arent obeying it.
Does this mean to give up and not attempt to try to live it? It is with His help only that can we come close to being what we should be.
