What is the most important thing about a relationship?  Could it be that it is the time spent in getting to know someone.  Without spending time you dont have a relationship.  It cannot be one-sided.

Matthew 20:16; 22:14 - God calls many and would chose us if we would let Him, how - by choosing Him.

A relationship is a personal knowing of another as with God or anyone else.

Mt 25:10-12  of the five virgins who had to go get more oil for their lamps the Lord said, I know you not.  Why? Because they knew Him not and were not ready for Him, Mt 25:13 Watch therefore, for you now neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.  Also read: Luke 13:24-27

Mt 7:20  Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Verse 21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

Verse 22 Many wil say to Me in the day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?

Verse 23 And I then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! 

Luke 6:46  But why do you call me, Lord Lord, and do not do the things which I say.

Genesis 4:1  Now Adam knew his Eve his wife, and she conceived

Ge 4:25  And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son

The knowing has to be personal & intimate whether a spouse, parent, child or the Lord.  And without spending quality time you will  not have a good, healthy, lasting relationship. 

How does one have a relationship with the Lord read His Word to us, the Bible, spend time in prayer.
